How to record your Chromebook’s screen

To launch Chrome OS snipping tools, press and hold Control + Shift

Open the Status area, and choose Screen capture if your Chromebook has gone into tablet mode.

Just above the Shelf, the snipping tool will appear at the bottom. To navigate to the Screen Record menu, tap the camcorder icon.

The default mode of the snipping tool is “Record Partial Screen”. To select the area you wish to record, use the plus-shaped icon with the crosshair icon.

This allows you to capture a video on a website, such as YouTube, without recording the entire page.

Please note that you cannot move the area being recorded. You can record another area of the screen by canceling the current recording and retracing it to a new location.

You can record the contents of an app or window using the “Record window” option. This option allows you to record the content of both apps while you are using them in split-screen mode on your Chromebook.

Your cursor will change to a camcorder icon when you choose the “Record Window” option. Click anywhere you wish to record and move the icon using the touchpad.

You can also click the dashed-square icon to record the entire screen.

The snipping tool will display a 3-second countdown in the selected area or window before it records. The screen recorder captures all visual elements of the screen, including the cursor. The screen recorder does not capture audio by default.

To record audio from your Chromebook’s screen, you will need to enable the microphone manually. You can follow the steps below to find out how it works.

How to record Chromebook screen without audio

Before hitting the record button, click on the gear icon in the snipping tool. Then toggle on the Record mic.

The settings will be saved by the snipping tool so that you don’t need to enable the microphone again on any subsequent recordings. You can record without audio by following the same steps as above, but toggle off the Record mic option.

The microphone can be used to record audio from any media on your Chromebook. The microphone can also pick up ambient sound. If you are screen recording audio with your Chromebook, ensure that it is done in a quiet area with minimal ambient noise.

If you don’t have one, an external noise-canceling microphone is a better option. This can help reduce background noise and improve the quality of the recorded sound.

How to stop Chromebook Screen Recording

The Status area, located in the bottom-right corner of the screen, should have a red stop icon. Clicking this icon will instantly stop the recording and save it.

A notification will also be sent to the Status Area. To view the recording, click the Show folder in the Files app. Chrome OS saves screen recordings and screenshots in the Downloads folder.
